In 2018, there were 18 buildings with a roof height of at least 150 meters (490 ft). The majority of the high-rise structures in the Paris region are concentrated in three separate areas: The Tour Montparnasse is the highest structure in Paris and the only skyscraper within the municipal boundaries. The other two are the La Défense business district and Rue du Rhône in Lyon.
Paris has a number of restrictions for building heights and weights. For example, no building can weigh more than 80,000 tons or have a height greater than 450 feet. The maximum height permitted by law is 145 feet, but this limit includes wind turbines and radio telescopes.
In general, tall buildings are welcome in Paris, as long as they are used appropriately. The city's skyline is starting to fill up, which is good for business. However, many people complain about the rising cost of real estate near major stations, in places like République and Bastille, so look into these prices before buying.
Paris has not learnt from its tower experience. When modernists ruled the planning department in Paris in the 1960s and 1970s, height restrictions were eased. The 210-meter (689-ft.) Tour Montparnasse, which defaced the city in 1973, was one outcome. Others include the 647-meter (2133-ft.) Val de l'Étang skyscraper in Nice and the 461-meter (1504-ft.) Grande Pyramide office block in Algiers.
But these are now old buildings with very little appeal for new tenants. The Tour is empty and will likely be so for some time to come. The same can be said of many other towers across Europe that were built during this period.
The lack of interest in tall buildings comes as no surprise when you consider that most cities across Europe have difficulty finding space for offices, let alone residential apartments.
There are two main reasons why Paris is short of skyscrapers. The first is that it is a fairly small city with limited space, and building higher would just not be feasible. The second reason is that the government is against them. In 1995, France's parliament passed legislation prohibiting any more skyscrapers being built in the country. The law was later modified to allow for limited development on top of existing structures. However, this change didn't affect Paris, because no such development had been proposed since the law was passed.
Towers are invading again, and not just in the constantly high-rise Defense financial zone, three years after Paris modified its restrictions to enable building heights of up to 180 meters (about 590 feet). There's even a plan to build a skyscraper in downtown Paris.
In fact, there is no height restriction for buildings in Paris, except for those that are under construction or being remodeled and cannot be taller than what their owners want them to be. But many cities around the world have height restrictions, so this isn't surprising. The city government may have reasons for wanting to limit how high certain buildings go, such as preserving views from lower down or preventing air pollution from being trapped by higher-rises.
Some famous buildings show that great architects have been able to work within limits created by others. For example, the Chrysler Building in New York City was designed by Eero Saarinen but can only be as tall as he was allowed by city regulations. The Bass Museum of Art in West Los Angeles was designed by Richard Neutra but can only be as tall as he was allowed by county regulations. And a skyscraper isn't necessarily a big deal anyway; many cities with tall buildings don't have any problems with them at all. Tokyo has one of the most crowded streetscapes in the world while still having only four buildings over 40 stories high.
In Chicago, 67 buildings were under construction. Based on conventional height measurement, this list lists finished Chicago skyscrapers that stand at least 550 feet (168 m) tall. This measurement includes spires and architectural elements but excludes antenna masts. Also excluded are pinnacles, which are small pyramids usually placed at the summit of a church building to symbolize the resurrection of Christ.
The tallest building in Chicago is The John Hancock Center, which was completed in 1969. It stands 1,716 feet (541 m) high and has 72 floors.
Other notable buildings include One Lincoln Road, which is 647 feet (198 m) high with 37 floors; Trump Tower, which is 632 feet (190 m) high with 47 floors; and Tribune Tower, which is 581 feet (178 m) high with 48 floors.
Chicago has had more than its share of tragedy. The World Trade Center attacks killed 2,996 people, and the worst disaster in Chicago history occurred when an earthquake and tidal wave on January 22, 2010, killed 257 people and injured further hundreds.
Yet Chicago remains one of the most creative cities in America. A variety of artists live in or visit Chicago every year, making it a hub for music of all kinds from jazz to rock to R&B.
The tallest tower, however, is located in central Paris: the famed Eiffel Tower, which stands alongside the Seine River in the 7th arrondissement. The tallest building in the world is currently the Shanghai Tower which rises 468 m (1,633 ft). Other notable buildings that stand over 300 m (1000 ft) include the Citic Plaza in China, the Petronas Towers in Malaysia, and the Milwaukee Theatre in Wisconsin.
It is difficult to build a skyscraper because many factors need to be considered during the design phase. The weight of the building needs to be supported by the ground itself, and not just its exterior walls. The strength of the soil beneath the building needs to be taken into account, as does the amount of traffic that will be passing underneath it.
