Could there be a city of gold?

Many a conqueror was driven on a futile journey into South America's rainforests and mountains by the idea of El Dorado, a lost city of gold. But it was all a pipe dream. Recent archaeological study reveals that the "golden one" was a person rather than a site. Still, the mythology and art surrounding El Dorado have made it a popular subject for writers and artists over the years.

El Dorado is now known to have been a small town near present-day Bogotá, Colombia. However, at the time of its discovery, it was simply part of an area inhabited by several thousand people. So the question remains: why would anyone travel thousands of miles to find something that already existed? The answer may lie in the fact that gold was used as currency by many cultures across Europe and Asia when they first started trading with each other. It is possible that some Spanish explorers came across traces of gold use in India or China and decided to sail back home to Spain to tell their king about it. There are also reports of gold being found in Africa, which could explain how the news got back to Europe so quickly.

However, despite not being a real place, El Dorado has had an enormous impact on world culture. The legend of this mythical city has inspired poets such as William Blake and Edward Lear to write poems about it. It has also been the topic of numerous novels from Miguel de Cervantes to Daniel Dafoe.

Which area in America is called the "city of gold?"?

This ardour gave rise to the persistent story of a city of gold over the years. In the 16th and 17th centuries, Europeans thought that El Dorado, a location of vast wealth, was someplace in the New World. They called it "the city of gold."

Now, there is no such place as El Dorado, but there is a town in northern Colombia called Panamá which is very rich in gold. This is what caused all these stories about a city of gold being somewhere in the New World.

After the Spanish colonization of the Americas, many tales emerged about a city of gold hidden in the wilds of North America. Some said it was located in the Appalachian Mountains, but the majority believed it was in South America.

The term "city of gold" came from the fact that much of this gold was found in deposits near rivers with clear waters, like the color of gold. So, they called this region "the city of gold because of all the sunshine when it's not rain that makes those rivers flow.

Today, most people know that reference is made to the place where gold can be found in large quantities, but at first glance this territory seemed completely deserted to Europeans. Actually, it was full of indigenous people who were very afraid of the newcomers.

Who are the seven cities of gold in El Dorado?

They fantasize of following the path of the setting sun to El Dorado and the Mysterious Cities of Gold. On 1532, Esteban, a Spanish orphan, joins Mendoza, a navigator, and his companions, Sancho and Pedro, in their hunt for one of the Seven Cities of Gold in the New World, hoping to discover his father. When they arrive at the city of Cuenca, Esteban finds out that his father has been killed during an attack by Indians, and he goes alone into the wilderness, where he meets the Inca emperor, who has also lost someone close to him. The emperor offers Esteban an appointment as a nobleman and gives him a new name: Francisco de Coronado.

Coronado sets off again with an army to find the other six cities of gold, but he does not reach them all. He finds a last city on the edge of a great lake, which is filled with many golden objects. He believes this to be the final city of gold, but when he attempts to take it by force, he finds out that it is actually a magic kingdom where people are happy and free. Coronado decides to stay there instead of going further into the jungle with no end in sight.

El Dorado is one of the most famous books ever written in Spain. It has been translated into almost every language in the world. In fact, "El Dorado" is now a generic term meaning something very beautiful or spectacular.
