For three years The San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge took little more than three years to build. Surprisingly, for a contemporary construction project, the work was finished six months ahead of time and under budget.
The new bridge is an international-class structure that connects Oakland to Yerba Buena Island. It has eight traffic lanes and two sidewalks on each side. The main span over the bay is about half a mile long and makes use of the latest in computer technology to control the movement of vehicles. The bridge's design allows room for expansion as our population increases and our economy grows.

Drivers who don't have access to cash won't be able to pay the tolls, but they'll still be responsible for regular vehicle fees. Each tower is made up of two parts: the base and the deck. The base is a massive structure that sits on top of several piles driven deep into the bay bed. Its purpose is to prevent the bridge from moving laterally (side-to-side) and vertically (up and down). The deck is where all of the attractions people love about the Bay Bridge live and work. It consists of three separate sections: the north tower, the center section, and the south tower.
You may not know this, but the central portion of the bridge is actually a huge open air plaza that connects the two towers.
The designers devised plans and methodologies for safe and fast off-shore construction, and as a consequence, the bridge was completed in under 40 months, from June 2002 to October 2005. The main span is 8,853 feet (2,782 meters), making it the longest cable-stayed bridge in Asia.
The world's longest suspension bridge, the Qiaotou-Zhongxing Bridge, which crosses over water rather than land, is also located in China. It was built by the Shanghai Shengzhong Group Co., Ltd - a joint venture between Shanghai Shengzhong Construction Group and Chongqing Zhongheng Construction Group. The bridge opened to traffic in November 2016.
Other bridges that are longer include the Bayonne Bridge which is 9,595 feet (2,937 meters) long, the Puente del Rey which is 9,554 feet (2,932 meters) long, and the Rainbow Bridge which is 9,541 feet (2,930 meters) long.
In terms of volume, the World Trade Center San Francisco has the greatest storage capacity with 94 million cubic feet (2.6 million m3). The next largest is the Dayton International Airport Terminal Building with 48 million cubic feet (1.4 million m3).
Across the Tyne for three years However, it wasn't until 1924 that ideas for today's bridge began to take shape. Work on the massive edifice began in August 1925 and was completed in about three years. The bridge was created in the style of a ship, with rivets and panels that were welded together. It has been described as one of the greatest engineering achievements of its time.
The main span is 1,200 feet (365 m) long and consists of 1150 large box girders each weighing about 22,000 pounds (10,000 kg). There are also two 250-foot (76 m) side spans and three 165-foot (50 m) approach spans. The total weight of the bridge is about 7 million pounds (3.2 million kg).
It was built by John Wolfe Barry who had already constructed several other bridges across the United States. He used innovative new techniques such as welding that made his work popular with engineers today. The bridge was named after the River Tyne which it crosses. It was opened for traffic on November 17, 1931. Its cost was £750,000 ($1.5 million).

One of the most amazing engineering buildings in the United States is the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge. The American Society of Civil Engineers designated the bridge as a nationally significant structure in terms of engineering as well as its significance in California and national transportation history. The bridge is also one of the oldest continuously operating suspension bridges in the world.
It connects Oakland and Yerba Buena Island, forming an uninterrupted link between San Francisco and Berkeley. It is also the only bridge that crosses over the bay between San Francisco and Marin County. Opened in April 1937, it was built by McGolrick Park & Company, Inc., who had previously constructed the Lincoln and Golden Gate Bridges. The main span measures 1,070 feet from end to end, making it the longest continuous truss bridge in the world at the time it was built.
The bridge's importance cannot be overstated: It is one of the major connectors between Northern and Southern California, providing a vital connection between the metropolitan areas on either side of the bay. It also serves as a major roadway across the bay for traffic entering or leaving San Francisco. There are no tunnels under the bay, so all traffic has to cross it some how. Ships can't go around the city because of the bridges, so they must use the water approach if they want to enter or leave the port area.
