On farmland, there may be only one building per square mile, whereas in New York City, a street block one-tenth of a mile wide may have 20 buildings crammed into it.
The typical city block is about half a mile on a side, which is large enough to contain several streets with different names. But not all cities limit building height the same way, so this number could be different for another city.
In New York City, there are 100 square miles and about 24 million people, giving you about 500,000 buildings. But this number is probably an overestimate because it doesn't account for empty lots or buildings under construction. A more accurate figure is likely in the range of 200,000 to 300,000 buildings.

Smaller blocks can be found in rural areas while larger ones can be seen in some urban neighborhoods.
In Manhattan, each street has one main lane with sidewalks on both sides. These streets are called avenues or cross streets depending on which direction they run. Roads that go between avenues or cross streets are called at-grade roads. Streets that don't have an avenue or cross street designation include squares and parks. Some cities also have side lanes known as bicycle paths or pedestrian malls that occur periodically along major streets. These lanes are marked by white lines in some cities and yellow lines in others.
Manhattan is made up of small islands. So, some streets do not have addresses because they do not connect to another street or haven't been assigned one yet. Others have more than one address because they connect to multiple islands or parts of the island. For example, Central Park South has two different addresses depending on which part of the park you are talking about: 5th Avenue and 59th Street or 7th Avenue and 79th Street.
There are also streets in Brooklyn named after trees.
