It was made up of 28 high-rise buildings of 16 storeys each, with a total of 4,415 apartments placed largely in U-shaped clusters of three, reaching over two miles (three kilometers). The buildings were named after important people in American history: Lincoln, Jefferson, and Roosevelt. The development was designed by Graham, Anderson, Probst & White and built by the Chicago Housing Authority between 1934 and 1970.
There are also two playgrounds, an auditorium, a chapel, a gym, a library, and several community rooms. The main shopping area is called The Commons, so called because it used to be a public park before being developed. It has several small businesses including a food court and a movie theater that shows first-run films.
The development is considered one of the most innovative urban planning projects in America, setting a new standard for housing assistance programs. It was also important for providing affordable homes in a city with no zoning laws. The Chicago Housing Authority continues to work with nonprofit organizations to provide affordable housing today.
There are plans to build more than 500 units of affordable housing at the site. This would make it one of the largest affordable housing developments in the country.
The development is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
