The buildings were designed by HNTB Corporation in collaboration with Skidmore, Owings & Merrill LLP and Wilkinson Eyre Architects. Construction began in 1993 and was completed in 1998 at a cost of $150 million ($250 million including fixtures).
Petronas Towers got its name from Petronas Petrochemical Company Ltd., which sponsored the construction of the towers. The company is one of the largest integrated oil companies in Asia. Completed in 1998, the 52-story Twin Towers are the tallest structures in Malaysia and among the tallest in Southeast Asia. The spires can be seen from far away and serve as a landmark for Kuala Lumpur. It will be the highest building in India and third highest in the world when it is completed.
When it is complete, the India Tower will have the highest outdoor restaurant on earth, with 472 seats at its top observatory deck. It also has the largest indoor swimming pool in Asia, with an estimated capacity of 40,000 liters (10,240 gallons).
The India Tower is being built by the Indian division of the Chicago-based developer DRF Group. Its construction was started in 2009, but was halted after funding was withdrawn by the investor in 2015. The project was later revived after a new investor was found, and construction resumed in 2016.
It is expected to be finished in 2020, but may take longer due to the number of delays that have occurred during construction.
India's government approved the construction of the tower in 2005. At the time, it was the world's second-highest building, behind only Shanghai's Jinmao International Center, which is now third highest. However, the China World Tower has since been surpassed in height by several other buildings, making the India Tower currently hold this title.
