The word "skyscraper" was initially given to buildings of 10 to 20 floors, but by the late twentieth century, it has come to refer to high-rise skyscrapers of remarkable height, often larger than 40 or 50 stories. The Burj Khalifa in Dubai is currently the world's tallest building at over 800 feet (244 m) tall.
Every floor in a skyscraper is the same size as any other. In fact, the first and second floors are usually reserved for parking, while the rest of the space is used for office space. The upper floors are sometimes taller than the lower floors, because they have more space per square foot for housing.
There are only four real ways to get from one floor to another: stairs, elevators, hoists, and helicopters. Stairs and elevators are the most common methods. Hoists are used mainly in hotels and airports, while helicopters can be seen hovering over city streets near tall buildings.
When you climb stairs, you are walking up hill, one step at a time. This is called "ascending stairway." When you use an elevator, you are taking steps down hill, one at a time. This is called "descending stairway." Both methods are useful when walking up a building is easier than climbing all those stairs!

Other large buildings have names that reflect their function: church, palace, museum, library, theater, arena, observatory, etc. The Palace of Westminster in London is a huge complex including many rooms used for different purposes. It is where members of Parliament meet and vote on laws and other matters before them. The House of Lords is one part, where peers can debate issues before voting; the Senate is another part, which votes on resolutions proposed by the House of Commons.
The British Library in London is a monumental building housing an extraordinary collection of books and manuscripts. It was designed by Sir John Soane (1753–1837) and built between 1807 and 1813. Its name comes from its original purpose: "to collect books and create a library". Today, the library has additional functions including as a concert hall and cinema.
The Cathedral of Christ Church in Canterbury contains the highest tower in England at 102 feet (31 m). It is not actually part of the cathedral but stands adjacent to it.

Today, the world's tallest building is the Shanghai Tower at 338 m (1,079 ft). It has 24 floors above the ground floor and 847 meters (0.5 miles) high.
The concept of a skyscraper with multiple floors arises from the number of stories required to accommodate a building. A story is defined as the maximum possible length of a floor in a building without exceeding the height limitation of a story. For example, a floor that is no more than 5% longer than the width of its room would be considered a standard floor size. Floors are usually between 6 and 12 meters (20 and 40 feet) wide. There can be up to four or five rooms on a floor, but only one door leading into the hallway. The other three are typically service entrances for plumbing and electricity. Each floor requires its own roof structure to prevent walls collapsing due to weight of the ceiling material.
As buildings become taller, there are more floors needed to reach the same height. For example, a 15-story building needs to be 2.4 times as tall as a 10-story building to have the same amount of space on each floor.

The Burj Khalifa in Dubai is the tallest building in the world. It is also the highest building outside of North America and Europe. The tower has 124 floors above ground level and 2 below ground. It is 828 meters (2743 feet) tall.
The Shanghai Tower will be the second-highest building in the world when it is completed. At 468 m (1567 ft), it will be 75 m (246 ft) taller than the current record holder, the Willis Tower. The Shanghai Tower will have 102 floors above ground.
The third-highest building by height is the Petronas Towers, which are twin towers in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. They are 522 m (1,741 ft) tall with 61 floors each. The fourth-highest is the Samsung Sky Tower, which is 523 m (1,742 ft) tall with 63 floors.
The fifth-highest is the Huaxi Building, which is 524 m (1,745 ft) tall with 65 floors.
