King Shah Jahan, This magnificent mosque in Old Delhi is India's biggest, with a courtyard that can accommodate 25,000 pilgrims. It was started in 1644 and ended up being Shah Jahan's ultimate architectural extravagance, the Mughal emperor who constructed the Taj Mahal and the Red Fort. The mosque is also known as the Dakkan-e-Shah Jahan. It is believed that he used to spend his nights away from his beloved wife so he could think of ways to make her happy again. Each year, millions of tourists visit the Jama Masjid to take a peek inside this incredible monument.
The construction of the mosque was initiated by Shah Jahan's queen, Mumtaz Mahal, but she died before it was completed. He then ordered the completion of the project himself. The mosque is built around a large courtyard which serves as a place of worship for Hindus and Muslims alike. There are three entrances on the north, south, and east sides of the mosque. The northern entrance is made of red sandstone and the other two are made of white marble. Inside the mosque, there are three chambers: one for men, one for women, and another for holy books. All around the walls of the three chambers are beautiful paintings depicting stories from the Koran.
After the death of Shah Jahan, the future of the mosque was not clear yet. Some officials wanted to complete the project but others didn't.
249 feet in height. The Murudeshwar Temple is located atop Kanduka Hill, which is flanked on three sides by the Arabian Sea. This temple is devoted to Lord Shiva, and it is being topped with a 20-story Gopura, as is the case with other important South Indian temples. It stands 249 feet tall and is called the world's highest gopura. The foundation stone for the temple was laid in 1173 AD by Chola King Rajaraja I and was completed in 1268 AD. The temple is also known as "Chidambaram Natarajan" after its founder.
The original structure of the temple has been expanded over time through addition of new stories to the existing building. The present form of the temple is a result of extensive renovations carried out between 1580-1650 AD by Chola King Raja Raja Cholapuram. He is said to have performed severe austerities to obtain energy enough to cut down half of the mountain on which the temple stands. However, only the base of the previous structure remains today.
The main deity in the temple is called "Nataraja". It is a representation of Shiva in the dance of creation and destruction. The original image of Nataraja in the temple is believed to be made of gold. But due to damage caused by time and nature, it has been replaced several times over the years by newer images. The latest version was installed in 2004-05 at a cost of $1.5 million.
