It has the equivalent of 104 normal floors, however it only has 94 stories due to several levels with lofty ceilings. There is one record, though, that it did not break. It's just the Western Hemisphere's second-tallest freestanding structure—the CN Tower in Toronto is roughly 40 feet higher.
The Freedom Tower was built as a monument to the men and women who served in the United States Armed Forces and died while protecting their country. It is also meant to be an enduring symbol for America's commitment to freedom and democracy around the world. The tower's height has been called "a bold assertion of American power and creativity."
It stands 468 feet (140 meters) high and contains the largest single-crystal ball in the world. The ball is 32 feet (10 meters) in diameter and is made of glass that has been polished using computer-controlled lasers. It provides visitors with a view of up to 70 miles (110 kilometers).
The original idea for a monument to freedom came from President Franklin D. Roosevelt. He wanted something that would stand as a reminder of America's commitment to freedom and democracy after its own name. The president asked architects to create a design for such a building but no final decision was made at the time of his death in 1945. Then, Congress decides what role the tower will play in honoring the nation's war heroes and how much it will cost to build.
The bulk of the structures on the list are in American cities, with 92 towering above 235 meters. The CN Tower is a 553.3-meter-tall concrete communications and observation tower in downtown Toronto, Ontario, Canada. On November 3, 2014, the tallest building in the Western Hemisphere was finished. Before this construction, the Chrysler Building in New York was thought to be the tallest building in the Western Hemisphere.
The CN Tower is now the second-highest building in North America (behind the Burj Khalifa in Dubai), and it's been named one of the "World's Most Dangerous Buildings". Its owner, CNTower Entertainment Group, states that the tower is not unsafe but does go through periodic safety inspections by certified engineers.
In addition to being the tallest free-standing structure in the world, the CN Tower is also the fastest elevator in the world when measured from floor to floor. It can climb at a rate of up to 441 feet per minute or 2.5 miles per hour. This makes two trips up or down the elevator shaft in less than three minutes.
The top of the CN Tower is open to the public as a viewing platform. There are several restaurants and bars at the summit, as well as a revolving restaurant where you can enjoy Canadian cuisine.
If you visit the CN Tower, you cannot help noticing that it looks like a giant piece of folded paper.
Each skyscraper has 47 floors and 110 stories, is 1368 feet tall (North Tower) and 1362 feet tall (South Tower). The total height of both towers together is just over 5000 feet.
The North Tower was completed in 1973. The South Tower followed in 1992. These are the only two skyscrapers in New York to have their heights exceeded by another tower since the North Tower was destroyed on September 11, 2001.
The North Tower had 104 permanent staff members when it collapsed. Of these, 81 were killed. The remaining 23 people survived the attack but died during the building's recovery efforts or later from its effects. The death toll included six firefighters from one single firehouse.
The cause of the collapse is still not known with certainty. However, evidence suggests that explosives may have been used to bring the structure down.
As well as being a tragedy for those who worked there, the attacks caused extensive damage to the surrounding area. More than 10 years on, the site remains unrepaired and many residents continue to complain about noise and vibration generated by construction work underway on some of the other buildings at the site.
