It was noteworthy until the 2001 assault for its massive twin towers, each of which had 110 floors and created a prominent element of the New York skyline. One World Trade Center's roof stood at 1,368 feet (417 meters), whereas Two World Trade Center stood at 1,362 feet (415 meters). The tallest building in New York when they were built was 725 Pennsylvania Avenue, which is now One Penn Plaza.
When completed in 1973, One World Trade Center was the world's first skyscraper to be topped by an observatory deck and was designed by Robert Moses Jr., who also designed Grand Central Terminal. The other tower was designed by William Pereira and developed by Silverstein Properties. They called it Two World Trade Center because they wanted to provide more office space than one skyscraper could hold.
The 104-story buildings were initially intended as temporary housing for American war workers during the reconstruction of Europe, but were never demolished. Instead, they became permanent residential buildings that housed some of New York City's most expensive real estate.
Both buildings were extensively damaged in the September 11 attacks and have been rebuilt. One World Trade Center reopened in April 2014 after being remodeled and increased in height to 400 meters (1,312 feet). Two World Trade Center will open in late 2016 or early 2017 after also being renovated and increased in height to 450 meters (1,476 feet).
With the antenna, One World Trade Center is the city's tallest structure at 1,776 feet (and yes, that was on symbolic purpose). It stands tall in New Yorkers' hearts as the tenacious reaction to the 9/11 terror attacks, which brought down the two skyscrapers where One World Trade Center currently stands.
The main lobby of One World Trade Center is called The Atrium; it covers about 32,000 square feet and is made up of a central column surrounded by twenty-four bays, with each bay covering a current exhibit. The Atrium is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. There are security checks before entering the Atrium, but they're easy enough to pass through.
Visitors can climb to the top of the tower for a view over New York City. The observation deck is located on the 102nd floor and has been called one of the best views in America. From here, you can see clear across New York State, all the way to the Canadian border.
You don't need a ticket to visit the Atrium; it's free and open to the public daily from 8:30 a.m. to 10 p.m., except for between 12:01 a.m. and 8:30 a.m. when elevator operators train to attend to emergency situations.
However, visitors must be able to walk up several flights of stairs to reach the observation deck.
110 tales The World Trade Center complex's centerpieces were the Twin Towers. 1 WTC (North Tower) and 2 WTC (South Tower) each supplied almost 10 million square feet of office space for about 35,000 individuals and 430 businesses.
The buildings were not only important for their size but also because they were the highest skyscrapers in New York City. Their height made them excellent radar targets and helped enable the United States to develop stealth technology.
They were also very popular with tourists, especially children who loved climbing up inside the towers' stairwells. In addition, they served as beacon lights at night, helping guide aircraft onto landing strips.
Both buildings were completed in 1973 and stood 100 floors or more tall. They were destroyed on September 11, 2001 when al-Qaeda terrorists hijacked several commercial airplanes and used them as weapons against America's economy. The attacks killed approximately 3,000 people, including all staff members aboard both planes that hit the Twin Towers.
One building collapsed after being hit by a plane and the other burned for several days before collapsing.
The destruction of the Twin Towers has had an enormous impact on tourism in New York City.
