With a total height of 829.8 m (2,722 ft, or little over half a mile) and a roof height (excluding antenna, but including a 244 m spire) of 828 m (2,717 feet), the Burj Khalifa has been the world's tallest structure and building since its completion in 2009. The Burj Dubai was designed by Zaha Hadid before her death in 2008. It is thought that she left the design team just before completion to allow them time to finish their work without interference from herself or her team. It is believed that her husband Mohammed Al-Abbar helped bring the design to life by providing inputs to ensure that it met with approval from local authorities. He has been credited as a co-creator of the building along with Zaha Hadid.
It is thought that Mr. Abbar played an important role in ensuring that The Burj Dubai was approved by local officials. When it came to light that The Burj Dubai would be replacing the Smith Tower which had been the tallest building in the United States since 1990, he made several attempts to have it declared "temporary" so that it did not need to follow any height restrictions. This request was rejected by federal authorities who believe that it is important for there to be no gap between buildings of this nature so they can be seen from far away on satellite images.
