In 1970, the first One World Trade Center topped the Empire State Building's 1,250-foot height. Although the new one is expected to be the highest structure in the United States, Dubai's Bhurj Khalifa is, by some measures, the tallest skyscraper in the world. When it opens in 2018, it will be 830 feet tall and contain more than 50 floors.
The original World Trade Center was completed in 1973 at a cost of $400 million (USD). It was the first true international trade center, with an emphasis on business services. The twin towers were almost destroyed on September 11, 2001 when al-Qaeda terrorists hijacked several commercial airplanes and used them as weapons to attack New York City. The tragedy killed nearly 3,000 people.
Since that day, trade center has become a symbol for hope and recovery from disaster. It is now home to four major office buildings, including the 555-foot high spire of One World Trade Center.
Although they no longer stand as high, studies show that the trade centers were not as strong as previously thought. In fact, after being hit by aircraft parts during the attacks, both buildings suffered structural damage and had to be demolished later that year. Their replacements have been designed with stricter safety standards than before. For example, they are now built using what's called "boxed steel," which is three times thicker than normal steel.
The new One World Trade Center began building in 2006 and surpassed the Empire State Building to become the city's tallest structure in April 2012. The 1,776-foot (541 m) One World Trade Center surpassed the Willis Tower to become the tallest skyscraper in the United States when it was completed in May 2013. The Chrysler Building is also a candidate for this title; however, since it was not built as a skyscraper but rather as an office building, it cannot be considered part of the world's largest collection of skyscrapers.
The Empire State Building is still the largest building in New York by floor space. It holds this title because it has 50 floors above ground with a total area of 2,250,000 square feet (20,900 m²). The One World Trade Center has 86 floors and a height of 1,776 feet (541 m), making it only 16 feet (48 m) shorter than its predecessor. However, due to its use of glass panels instead of steel girders to support itself, the tower is considered to be more of a sculpture than a true structural skeleton - its occupants are protected by iron rods but not by solid walls. The building's volume exceeds that of the Empire State Building by a factor of about 12.
In addition to being taller, the One World Trade Center has 33 percent more floor space than its predecessor.

World Trade Center Two, now known as 2 World Trade Center, opened its doors in 1973. The 656-foot-tall building was the first to be built on Ground Zero immediately following the September 11 attacks. It has 33 stories above street level and contains 535 apartments plus a few retail spaces.

It is now home to several businesses including a branch of the New York Public Library.
In addition, Manhattan Beach is a neighborhood on the South Shore of Staten Island where many large buildings are under construction or have recently been renovated. When complete, these buildings will raise the height of Manhattan Beach to over 100 feet.

The Empire State Building is the largest skyscraper in New York by floor area and volume of rentable space. It is also one of the most expensive apartments in the world. The Burj Khalifa in Dubai is the largest skyscraper in the world by total height. The current record holder - with 2,722 feet (837 m) - will be surpassed by the currently under construction Jeddah Economic City Tower when it is completed in 2020.
The Petronas Towers in Kuala Lumpur are the highest twin towers in the world. They are also the third tallest building in Malaysia (after Menara Twin Tower and Puteri Harbour Square).
The Shard in London is the tallest building in Europe. At 1,016 feet (305 m), it is less than half the height of One World Trade Center but reviews have been highly positive. The previous record was held by the Millenium Tower which at 472 feet (143 m) was considered a high-rise when it was built in 1999.
