The World Trade Center's "Twin Towers" are now officially open in New York City. The towers surpassed the Empire State Building as the highest structures in the world. They are 2,721 feet tall with 47 floors for each tower. The Empire State Building is 2,381 feet tall with 112 floors.
Both buildings were designed by architect David Childs and constructed between 1973 and 2002. The Empire State Building was completed first on April 4, 1931. The Trade Centers were opened simultaneously on September 11, 2001. They were destroyed during a terrorist attack that also killed nearly 3,000 people.
The World Trade Center contained two major office buildings: One was called the North Tower, it was owned by WTC Properties LLC which also owned the South Tower. The other was called the South Tower, it was owned by WTC Investors LLC. Both buildings were demolished on February 26, 2003 to make way for the World Trade Center Memorial.
The Empire State Building has 811 rooms available in its guestrooms. The Trade Centers had 1,776 rooms available in their guestrooms.
Both buildings have been renamed several times. When they were new, they were called the World Trade Center because they were across from each other and traded goods internationally. In 1977, they were rebranded as "the Twin Towers".

On the site of the Twin Towers, One World Trade Center will formally open in New York City. The rebuilt skyscraper, along with the remainder of the World Trade Center complex, replaced the Twin Towers and surrounding complex, which were destroyed in the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. The opening ceremony was held on November 3, 2014.
The One World Trade Center building is 828 feet tall, making it the second-tallest building in New York City (after Trump Tower). The $14 billion project also contains a shopping mall, office space, hotel rooms, and residential apartments. It is owned by an affiliate of Boston-based developer Tishman Speyer who bought the property from the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey for $1.8 billion.
One World Trade Center was built in just over four years at a cost of about $14 billion. The original Twin Towers took 10 years to build and were destroyed in less than 10 minutes during the attacks.
In January 2015, a small fire broke out on the 86th floor of the tower but was quickly contained to one apartment unit. No one was injured.
Also in January 2015, construction began on the world's first completely carbon-neutral skyscraper.

The Empire State Building was originally known as the World Trade Center. It was built as a monument to America's economic power and was intended to be the world's largest office building. After the attacks, government officials decided to rename the Empire State Building in order to avoid further confusion with the still-undamaged World Trade Center. This action was taken because many people assumed that since the World Trade Center was now gone that its occupant would no longer be able to claim the title of world's tallest building.
On November 3, 2014, One World Trade Center will formally open in Manhattan. The opening of One World Trade Center represents the culmination of a decade-long process that began after the attacks when then-New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced his intention to rebuild what was then called "Ground Zero".
In addition to One World Trade Center, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey is also building the Freedom Tower, which is intended to be the new home of the United States Congress. The construction of these buildings has been met with controversy due to their proximity to Ground Zero.
In addition, a memorial museum called the "Intrepid Museum" is being built for display of artifacts recovered from the site of the original World Trade Center complex. It is expected to open in 2020.

The Freedom Tower will be even taller, reaching 2,716 feet (828 m) when it is completed in 2016. By comparison, the Empire State Building is 1,454 feet (442 m) tall, the Willis Tower (formerly known as Sears Tower) is 1,451 feet (440 m) tall, and Taipei 101 is 1,651 feet (500 m) tall.
