One Trade Center in New York City is America's tallest building, standing at 1776 feet. The Willis Tower in Chicago, originally known as the Sears Tower, has lost its distinction as the tallest skyscraper to New York City's almost finished One World Trade Center. When it is completed in 2014, One World Trade Center will be 2 inches taller than the Willis Tower.
The Sears Tower was once planned to be the world's tallest building, but construction delays forced it to be surpassed by the World Trade Center towers in New York City. The Sears Tower is still considered a major work of architecture and design, especially since it uses many advanced technologies at the time of its construction.
Its unique shape makes the Sears Tower stand out from other buildings, and it has been called one of the first great modernist structures. The tower's design was created by Peter Bohlin and Erik Larson who were inspired by Mies van der Rohe's glass curtain wall system. By comparison, the height of One World Trade Center is 1,776 feet, and it too covers a mile-square area when planted on the ground.
The reason for this is simple geometry: if two lines are drawn from the center of the Earth to the edge of the planet, and those lines cross somewhere above the surface of the ground, then the distance between the crossing points will be greater for a tower or other vertical structure. This is true whether the structure is used for art or commerce - or both.
So when choosing where to build the world's tallest skyscraper, your options are limited to places where geology provides an advantage.
