The remaining seven towers were designated as 3–7 World Trade Center, with some referred to by their street addresses. They were formerly the highest structures in the world. The Twin Towers were the highest structures in the world when they were initially constructed. They remained the highest for three years after their completion in September 1973.
The Freedom Tower will be the first skyscraper to top out at 1,776 feet (541 m), replacing One World Trade Center which now stands at 1,776 feet (541 m). The topping out ceremony was held on May 24, 2014. It is expected to be completed in 2016.
In addition to being the tallest building in New York, the Twin Towers were the largest building in the world by volume when they were built. They remain the largest by volume.
The World Trade Center complex included four other skyscrapers located at Four Times Square and One Pennsylvania Plaza. These buildings are not considered part of the World Trade Center site and do not share its history. They stand at a height of 708 feet (213 m), 998 feet (300 m), 1043 feet (310 m), and 1103 feet (335 m), respectively.
Four Seasons Hotel New York City, located at 40 Wall Street, is the only other building that remains standing from the initial complex.
The first World Trade Center housed the Twin Towers, which when they opened on April 4, 1973, were the highest structures in the world. The complex also housed the Marriott World Trade Center (3 WTC), as well as the 4 WTC, 5 WTC, 6 WTC, and 7 WTC. It is now known as the World Trade Center Site.
When completed in 1972, the Twin Towers were the tallest buildings in the world, standing 1,453 feet (442 m) tall with 110 floors each. They were built by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, who owned them until 2001 when they were bought by a private company called World Trade Center Properties. The complex had a total area of 1,016,654 square feet (93,000 m²).
The two towers were identical except for their heights; however, only one tower collapsed on September 11, 2001. The other stood as a memorial to those lost that day.
In 2010, a new skyscraper was completed at the site called One World Trade Center. It is currently the second-highest building in New York City, behind the Empire State Building and has 104 floors. Another building will be ready for occupancy in 2014. This third skyscraper will be called Two World Trade Center and have 72 floors.
After 9/11, many proposals were made to replace the Twin Towers, but none were successful.

WTC 1 was built into the bedrock at a depth of 70 feet (21 m). The Twin Towers were built on top of each other, with their foundations extending down 48 feet (14 m) into the soft soil of New York City's Hudson River Valley.
WTC 1 has 71 stories, while the Twin Towers had 106. This makes 1 WTC 7% higher than the Twin Towers.
1 WTC was opened to tenants in February 2004, just over nine years after the September 11 attacks. The Twin Towers were destroyed during that attack, which also killed nearly 3,000 people. The building of 1 WTC was therefore seen as a triumph over terrorism. However, its architect, David M. Childs, called it "a memorial to the victims of terrorism" who "will never be forgotten."

The supertall tower bears the same name as the North Tower of the first World Trade Center, which was demolished in the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.

On September 11, 2001, the Twin Towers were demolished and the scene of the great majority of the victims, a concluding episode that has since overshadowed the remainder of the World Trade Center's tragedy. One World Trade Center, which replaced them, was finished in 2014 and is presently the seventh-tallest structure in the world. It is not clear which tower is taller.
The Twin Towers were originally constructed to be identical buildings. However, after 9/11 when construction on One World Trade Center began, it was decided to make this building by far the tallest in New York City. Although this decision has been criticized, it does allow for an interesting comparison between the two towers. The original plan called for the Twin Towers to be identical structures up to the 98th floor before converting to a single tower. It is likely that if this conversion had occurred, they would have remained equal in height until their completion in 1973 and 1990 respectively.
However, due to damage caused by terrorists on September 11, 2001, the original blueprint was discarded and the buildings were instead designed with separate heights. This means that even though they were once intended to be twin towers, they are now considered separate buildings with regard to height.
Although One World Trade Center is currently the tallest building in New York City, it is expected that the title will be taken away from it soon.
