The current White House was built between 1792 and 1794 by James and John Marshall who were assistants to Benjamin Franklin building the original federal city. The Whites had eight children and buried four of them in the backyard. Today's garden is based on what they grew up around. After the Marshalls died out, the house went through several more changes before being bought by President Theodore Roosevelt in 1882. He renovated it and moved into its present form.
Roosevelt is probably the most famous White House occupant because of his efforts to protect animals and land that we now call national parks. He also improved government efficiency by using the modern executive branch office system that we know today. After Roosevelt, there were only three other presidents to live in the White House: William Howard Taft, who was elected president but never took office because of death by assassination; Woodrow Wilson, who is still considered our longest-serving president because of his two terms; and then Harry Truman who was elected for the first time while Roosevelt was still alive.
