Depending on the type of home, construction materials may include steel, aluminum, wood, or asbestos. The Type B2 aluminum prefab was built in four pre-assembled portions that could be delivered by lorry anywhere in the country. The house itself weighs about 22,000 pounds and measures 70 feet long by 28 feet wide.
The design was created by American architect Richard Neutra in 1946. It features flat roofs, exposed concrete walls, and extensive use of glass. Two other similar houses were built under the Neutra Design System program. The Type B2 has been updated over time to meet current building standards but remains true to its original design intent.
It is estimated that there are still more than 5,000 prefabricated homes in the United States today.
