The first recorded use of the term "step pyramid" was by Thomas Jefferson who described the Pyramid of Giza as a "stepped pyramid." However, Jefferson may have been referring to its resemblance to a step ladder rather than a pyramid. There are two types of step pyramids: those with straight sides (similar to a straight-sided pyramid) and those with curved sides (like a dome).
Step pyramids were used extensively in Egypt during the Old Kingdom (2600 B.C. to 2200 B.C.) and Middle Kingdom (2000 B.C. to 1600 B.C.) periods. The largest known step pyramid in Egypt is at Saqqara, which is approximately 394 feet (120 m) tall with 33 steps.

Why do global cultures place such importance on step pyramids? It could be because they represent growth and change, two things that every culture values. Or it could be because they're simply interesting objects to look at. However, what's important is that we know about them because so many different types exist across multiple countries.
During the Third Dynasty, the Step Pyramid was constructed as Pharaoh Djoser's tomb. It was designed by Imhotep, a legendary architect who was eventually deified. The Step Pyramid has six stepped tiers and reaches 204 feet (62 meters) tall. It was the biggest structure in the world at the time. After Djoser's death, his body was removed from the sarcophagus and buried with him. The site now contains two monuments - a duplicate of the original Step Pyramid and a copy of the king's golden coffin.
In addition to being an impressive monument on its own, the Step Pyramid serves as a key component in the understanding of how high-ranking people were treated during the 3rd Dynasty. It is believed that Pharaoh Djoser was given a royal burial because he was considered a god after his death. This means that his body was not put into the sarcophagus like someone would expect for a regular person but instead it was placed in a special chamber inside the pyramid. In this way, it could be accessed by priests during ritual ceremonies responsible for informing the soul of Pharaoh Djoser where it would spend eternity.
Besides being extremely large, another reason why the Step Pyramid is important is because it had a certain design which wasn't used again until much later. Before the construction of the Great Wall of China, the Step Pyramid is said to be the first true building project of its kind.
