A stilt floor is a partly covered parking spot on a business or residential building's ground level. Its height varies between 2.4 and 2.7 meters. A stilted floor is supported by pillars and has four open sides. It generally has a generator room, a switch room, a society and information room, and so on. The word comes from the Swedish language and means "to stand in". This type of floor provides additional space on which to place vehicles, especially those that are taller than typical cars. They are usually found on buildings over three stories high.
Stilt floors are commonly used in Europe for parking delivery trucks. Because they can be raised up above street level when not in use, they reduce congestion in cities during rush hour and avoid blocking access ramps or elevator pits. Delivery drivers use hand-operated levers inside their trucks to raise or lower the floors as needed. When driving off, the trucks lift the stilts so they don't interfere with other traffic or have to be pushed out of the way.

Stilt parking was originally designed for buildings without enough room inside their garage doors to safely accommodate large vehicles. Before this type of parking became popular, people needed access to both sides of every vehicle to load or unload passengers or cargo.
Stilt homes (also known as pile dwellings or lake dwellings) are structures built on stilts (or piles) above the level of the ground or a body of water. Stilt homes are created largely to defend against flooding, but they also keep pests out. They are common in areas where there is periodic flooding.
There are several types of stilt houses. The most common type is the platform house, which is built with a flat base surrounded by one or more levels called platforms. The walls and floors on each platform are made of wood. Attached to the side of each platform is what is called a "wing" - that is, a section of building attached to the main structure but not part of the floor plan. These wings usually contain one or more rooms. The entire structure stands on wooden pilings driven into the mud or soil near the edge of a lake or riverbank.
People began building stilt homes many years ago when engineers developed ways to bridge bodies of water. By building their homes up off the ground, people were able to live in these areas that would otherwise be too dangerous or difficult to inhabit.
These days, people build stilt homes when they want to protect their property from floods or other disasters. Also, people may choose to live in a stilt home if the area has good fishing or other benefits to those who live there.
Stilts of this sort may reach great heights (more than 4 m or 13 ft under your feet). The taller the stilt, the more difficult it is to climb. In fact, some stilters avoid climbing their stilts entirely.
The tallest person ever recorded as standing on stilts was Dang Thuy Le (Vietnam) who was 8-feet, 5-inches (2.5 meters) tall. She began her career at age 19 in 1976 and died at age 35 in 1997. Today, there are many people who stand on stilts for a living, especially in Southeast Asia.
In addition to being tall, stilt walkers must be strong to support their own weight as well as that of their body armor and equipment.
