A door is distinguished by recessed panels enclosed by stiles, rails, and muntins. The parts of the frame are joined together with wooden pegs or nails. To make the process of building doors more efficient, some manufacturers combine different components such as stiles, rails, and muntins at one time. This reduces the amount of wood that must be cut to build a door.
During the colonial period, most doors were made from wood. Before metal became available, people turned to wood for their doorways because it was easy to work with and provided many opportunities for design. Even after metal came into use, most doors were still made from wood because they offered better security than their metal counterparts. By the late 18th century, iron was commonly used instead of wood for doors that were not expected to face extreme weather conditions.
As time went on, engineers began to develop new inventions that could be used in buildings. One such invention was the door lock. The first locks were made from brass and included keyholes. They were attached to the inside of doors so people could lock them from the outside. Later designs included knobs or handles you could turn to unlock the door. These locks prevented people from entering your home without your permission.
Doors with Frames and Panels These are the most common doors seen in practically all types of structures. Stiles, vertical members, and rails, as well as horizontal members, are grooved around the inside edges of the frame to accept the panels. The panels are composed of wood, plywood, ac sheets, or glass. They usually have a decorative molding around them.
Doorways without Frames These are used only in special cases where you need a large opening but don't want to waste material on creating a frame. Usually, these doors are made out of steel or aluminum. On top of that, they can be insulated to reduce heat loss or gain in cold weather or summertime use.
Folding Doors These doors fold along one edge so they can be stored away when not in use. They are useful for allowing more light into small spaces or providing access to rooms that wouldn't otherwise be reachable.
Glass doors These are the most energy-efficient type of door available. They consist of two pieces of glass separated by an air gap. One piece of glass is flat while the other has a groove milled into it. These pieces are joined together with clips or magnets, depending on which type of door you get. They provide full view through the door while also reducing heating or cooling losses due to conduction or convection.
Wooden doors These are the traditional type of door used before metal became available.
The ornamental recessed or flat parts in between the stiles and rails are referred to as panels. Six- or four-panel doors are very frequent, however the number of panels varies greatly. Lite This is a door window or glass pane. It can be made of glass, plastic, or wood.
Lite windows are used in doors to allow light into a room while still providing an opening for ventilation. In many cases, these windows are fixed, but they can also be movable if they are made of glass. The term "lite" comes from the Latin word lumen, meaning "light."
Lites are commonly found in paneled doors like those used in offices to allow natural light into the space while providing a window through which people can look inside the office when it is needed. These doors are usually constructed with three panels: one that fits within the frame of the door, one that fits within the jamb, and one that fits within the header or ceiling joist. The lite is usually located in the center panel where it provides both illumination and ventilation.
Door lites are used to describe any type of window that is found in a door. They can be fixed or movable, single or double-hung, solid or hollow core.
