CRYPT OF THE COUCH A single or companion configuration in which the entombed casket is parallel to the crypt front 36. The initial entombment will take place under the floor level in the "Westminster" edition. In other words, the CRYPT OF THE COUCH is a niche within a niche.
It is so called because the coffin sits on its side with the feet facing west, as in Westminster Abbey. The hands are usually folded over the chest. This is the commonest arrangement in England and Wales. It is also known as a "couch grave", a term that has fallen out of use.
In Scotland, there is no standard word for this type of burial, but it is referred to as a "coffin vault".
In Ireland, there are two types of crypt: the first is called a "coffin vault", while the second is called a "coffin-ground" (or "coffin-pit").
Coffin vaults were once commonly used in Ireland, but they are now preferred only for larger bodies such as those of politicians or celebrities.
