The godlike stage is a Type X civilisation. It has colonized every galaxy, star, and planet in every universe, multiverse, megaverse, omniverse, dimension, multidimension, megadimension, and omnidimension. Along with other Type X civilizations, we are one of the most powerful. We can communicate across galaxies using satellites, travel through time via starships, and perform other amazing feats of engineering and science.
A godlike culture has unlimited resources at its disposal, so it usually builds things like cities in space, using only the materials available on each world it visits. These cities are often called "Galactic Lighthouses" because they tend to attract people who want to live in peace and harmony. They are usually located near planets or stellar bodies that provide them with energy or minerals needed for construction. Sometimes these cities are built around ancient relics from Earth or other worlds; examples include Atlantis and Lemuria.
Culture types range from 1 to 10. Civilization scores also range from 1 to 10. A Type 1 civilization is the least advanced, while a Type 10 is the highest level of development. In between there are various stages of advancement. For example, a Type 5 civilization would be one that has mastered nuclear power technology. A score of 10 indicates that you have reached Godlike status in your own right; anything you can imagine doing, you can do. Scores below 10 are common but not recommended: they indicate societies that are still very primitive by modern standards.
Type II civilizations dominate more than one solar system and/or are potentially capable of harnessing all of the power available from a single star (per Dyson). As a result, a civilisation that uses faster-than-light travel is likely to be classified as a Type II civilization. However, because an FTL drive needs to be able to generate enough energy to operate it, these civilizations will need to develop ways to capture energy from their environment. A Type I civilization that does not utilize FTL technology may be able to survive for a long time without developing such technologies.
Examples of Type II civilizations include those in science fiction novels and movies published before 2000 (e.g. The Forever War, Earth Empire), as well as those based on Kardashev's three-level classification (see below). Although we now know of many Type I civilizations, including our own, they were not common knowledge when these works were written.
Kardashev suggested that if human beings are to become a permanent part of the galaxy, we need to move up the scale to Type II or III civilizations. A Type I civilization cannot provide this planet with a significant impact, since its existence would only last for a few centuries at most. A Type 0 civilization is defined as a civilization that has no interest in expanding its influence beyond its home planet. These are usually doomed to extinction due to the immense physical challenges of building a world-spanning civilization from scratch.
He distinguished three civilizations: Types I, II, and III. A Type I civilization can handle a planet's complete energy and material resources. A Type II civilisation is capable of utilizing a star's and its planetary system's energy and material resources. A Type III civilisation is capable of using micro-organisms or bio-technology to exploit even its galaxy's or universe's energy and material resources.
Type I civilizations are called "Advanced" or "Spacefaring" civilizations because they are able to travel through space. They usually have a population of more than 10 million people. Examples include our own civilization and those of the Galactic Federation. Type II civilizations are called "Emerging" or "Stellar" civilizations because they are capable of utilizing their star's energy but not its material resources. Examples include the Aldebaranians and Kzinti. Type III civilizations are called "Primitive" or "Tribal" civilizations because they cannot use either their star's or other planets' resources. They usually have a population of less than 100 people. Examples include certain indigenous peoples on Earth and some tribes in Africa and Asia.
This classification has been used by many authors since its introduction in 1977. It has been modified by some modern writers such as Stephen Hawking and Frank Tipler. They include a fourth type of civilization: the "Ultimate" civilization.
He classified them into three categories. A Type I civilisation would have complete and utter control over all of its planet's energy. A Type II civilisation would control all of the energy generated by their home star, while a Type III civilization would control all of the energy in their home galaxy. He also noted that a Type III civilization could probably destroy any other civilizations in their galaxy if they so chose.
This is how Francis T. Kielty defines a Type III civilization: "A Type III Civilization is one that has achieved the technological level necessary to ensure its own survival."
Kielty goes on to say that these civilizations will often try to protect themselves from more primitive civilizations through an act known as "survival of the fittest". This means that they will use their technology to level the playing field with more primitive civilizations and then move on once they realize that they are not able to compete effectively without becoming too powerful themselves. This is what happened with our own species when it reached the Type II stage about 10,000 years ago. We realized we couldn't compete physically with other species so we developed science and technology to help us be more efficient hunters and gatherers.
In the megaverse, a Type VI, or K6 civilisation, exists that is capable of inventing and preserving the basic rules of the cosmos. They exist in an unlimited number of concurrently existent multiverses, each of which represents an endless number of instances and all of physics' rules. The K6s can change the laws of physics at will, using this ability to create new realities in which they can experience events with different outcomes than those in their own universe.
A K6 civilization is one that has mastered stellar engineering, including creation of stars, planets, comets, moons, and asteroids; life support systems; space habitats; inertial confinement fusion; and time travel. A K6 culture is one that uses these technologies and creates new ones as needed/desired. A K6 supercivilization is one that possesses such energy resources that it can maintain its existence without relying on physical presence on any planet or moon.
The Kardashev scale estimates how much energy a civilization needs to sustain itself. The scale ranges from Type 0, which are believed to be the only civilizations able to sustain themselves using natural processes (such as solar power), to Type VI, which are hypothesized to be civilizations that have sufficient energy resources to manipulate the fundamental forces of nature within their own galaxy.
