The term "high rise" has different meanings for different people. For some, a high rise is a building that contains more than five stories. For others, it is a building that uses elevators to carry residents up several floors at a time. A high rise can be a single house, but it is also possible to have a high-density residential development with many such houses in close proximity. High rises are often found in large cities around the world; examples include New York City, Chicago, London, and Tokyo.
High rises were originally used as apartment buildings, but they now also include office towers, hotels, and other types of structures.
The history of high rises dates back at least as far as the 12th century when Al-Jahiz described tall buildings in his book Dala'il al-sharj al-akhir (The Conclusions of the Last Two Centuries). In the 16th century, Italian architect Antonio Sangiacomo built some of the first high-rise buildings in Europe.
When people say "high rise apartment," they usually indicate a rental in a building of a given height and number of levels. The concept of a "high rise" and the number of needed storeys differ from nation to country. In the United States, a high rise is defined as any structure with more than seven floors. In Canada, a high rise is defined as any building over 4 stories high.
In Europe, a high rise is generally considered to be any building with five or more floors. In Japan, a high rise is typically defined as a building with at least eight rooms per floor. However, some Japanese buildings reach up to 14 or 15 floors if they are not divided into apartments.
In India, a high rise is usually defined as a building with at least 10 floors. In Israel, a high rise is defined as a building with at least 12 floors.
In England, Wales and Ireland a high rise is usually defined as a building with at least 18 feet (5.5 m) of floor space per person.
In Germany, Austria and Switzerland a high rise is usually defined as a building with at least 24 meters (79 ft) of floor space per person.
In Australia, a high rise is usually defined as a building with at least 20 meters (65 ft) of floor space per person.
Apartment buildings with many storeys and at least one elevator are classified as low-rise, mid-rise, or high-rise. A mid-rise apartment has five to twelve floors, whereas a high-rise apartment has at least nine. In cities, mid- and high-rise buildings are the most prevalent. In suburban areas, where land is more valuable, low-rise apartments are more common.
Mid-rise buildings are easier to build than high-rises because they require fewer staircases and elevators. This reduces construction costs without reducing floor space available for leasing. Mid-rise buildings also give residents a view of some of the surrounding area. However, due to their distance from the ground, mid-rise buildings can be less secure than high-rises.
High-rise buildings are the most expensive to construct and occupy a large footprint on the site. They offer the best views in urban areas and have the most security due to the increased difficulty of intrusion. However, high-rise buildings can limit what you can do with your yard or unit. You cannot add balconies or other exterior features because these will affect height restrictions and need to be approved by your building manager.
There are several factors that determine how high a building can rise. The U.S. Federal Housing Administration (FHA) sets maximum allowable roof heights for various types of properties.
A high-rise building is taller than a low-rise structure, and its height is defined differently in different jurisdictions. In the United States, for example, a building must be at least 100 feet (30 m) tall to be a high-rise.
In Europe, by comparison, a high-rise is defined as a building with six or more floors.
There are many factors that go into determining how high a building can be before it becomes a high-rise structure. For example, in the United States a court may allow a developer to build higher if there's a need for more housing. In other countries, such as China, Japan, and India, government regulations limit how high a building can be built to prevent overcrowding and other problems associated with large numbers of people living in small spaces.
The difference between the highest floor in a high-rise building and the lowest floor in a low-rise building is called the "grade separation". Grade separation prevents residents on one level of a high-rise building from seeing out over an open space where people might fall or jump.
For example, in New York City, which has strict laws about grade separation, no building under 40 stories can have a grade separation.
Buildings with 13 or more stories are classified as high-rise. Skyscrapers are buildings with more than 40 stories and are classified as high-rise. High-rises are found in major cities around the world, including New York City, Chicago, Los Angeles, London, and Tokyo.
High-rises are used for offices, apartments, hotel rooms, shopping malls, movie theaters, and even homes. The most famous high-rise is probably the World Trade Center in New York City; it was destroyed by an attack on September 11, 2001.
The two towers had 49 levels total. They were built from 1973 to 1976 and at the time of their completion they were the tallest buildings in America.
