If the height of your fence, including trellis, reaches 2 metres (6.56 ft) above ground level, you must get planning approval. If the height of your fence exceeds one metre (3.28 ft) and you reside close to a highway used by automobiles or the pedestrian walkway of such a highway, you must obtain planning approval. Any structure taller than 1.5 metres (4.9 ft) requires approval from both a local authority and the Department for Transport.
