Dubai's Burj Khalifa The Burj Khalifa (Khalifa Tower) is the highest structure, at 828 meters (2,716 feet 6 inches). Construction began on September 21st, 2004, and the structure's exterior was finished on October 1st, 2009. It is currently the world's tallest building, surpassing the previous record held by the Petronas Towers in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
The current record was set when parts of the antenna were illuminated by LED lights for the first time. Previously, all of the building's exterior surfaces had been painted white to reduce air resistance and increase climbing speed.
The previous record holder, the Petronas Towers, are now second-highest with 732 meters (ranks #3 overall). They are also in Malaysia and were completed in 1998. The CN Tower in Toronto is currently ranked as the world's tallest free-standing structure at 747 m (or 2,527 ft), but this rank is due to be surpassed by the One World Trade Center when it is completed in 2014.

It is also believed to be the most expensive residential building in history. The cost of construction was estimated at $140 million at the time of completion. It is now known that the actual cost was $160 million.
The building incorporates many innovative technologies including solar panels that collect energy from the sun for lighting and heating purposes.
It also uses ground source heat pumps which use underground sources such as soil and rock cooling systems to provide heat and cool air through radiators just like your house does. No electricity is needed for this method of heating or cooling.
Finally, it is worth mentioning that the building is also equipped with wind turbines that power light bulbs and appliances during periods of no power supply from the grid.
