The number of square feet in a room is called its area. Area is used to calculate the cost of building materials and services required for construction. The more square feet needed, the more expensive the construction will be. Areas are usually given in square feet or per square foot. For example, a house with 200 square feet of floor space would have 8 square feet of flooring material. A room with that same size flooring would then have 200/8 = 25 square feet.
The area of a room is also used to determine heating and cooling costs. Heating and air-conditioning systems are most effective when rooms are large because large areas heat up or cool down faster. Systems must work harder to maintain temperatures in larger spaces so they use more electricity. There are several other methods for calculating room size, but this is the most common one. As you can see, it's very simple to calculate the square footage of a room.
A space 50 feet long and 20 feet broad, for example, may be 1,000 square feet. A triangular space with one right angle and dimensions of 40 feet by 50 feet might likewise occupy 1,000 square feet. The surface area of any plane figure is equal to the product of its width times length.
The size of any room or building is measured in terms of its area. Area is the number of square feet that you can estimate by using a simple formula: Area = width x height. For example, a room that is 12 feet wide and 18 feet tall has an area of 180 square feet.
In practice, it's difficult to measure areas in feet, so most surveyors use meters for measurements. One thousand square meters is about 32,768 square feet. So, the math for estimating roomsize is easy: Room size in meters is 32,768 divided by 100, which equals 33 square meters.
Some words on accuracy: It's hard to overestimate how much error there is in measuring rooms. Architects tend to use mathematical formulas to create accurate drawings from rough measurements - this is called "estimating" - but even at its best, estimation is only good to within a factor of two. So if your architect has estimated that your room is 10 meters by 15 meters, then it probably isn't!
