The structure is a hybrid "V"-shaped construction made of concrete and structural steel. The steel frame in the shape of a "V" wraps around the reinforced concrete tower, occupying hotel rooms and lobbies. The two wings encircle a space in the center to form the world's biggest atrium, towering around 180m tall. It has 49 floors, making it the second-highest building in Dubai after the Burj Khalifa.
The hotel was designed by Iraqi-British architect Lina Khan, who also designed London's Shard skyscraper. She chose to use concrete because of its durability and ability to resist earthquakes. The sweeping curves of the building are intended to reflect that of a sailboat cresting waves. The Burj Al Arab was built as a private residence by Sheikh Mohammed but later became part of the Burj Hotel chain when he acquired ownership of it. It is currently the highest hotel in the world.
Locationally, the hotel is on the Arabian Gulf near Dubai International Airport. It is accessible from the Dubai Metro's new free-ride system called the Palm Deira Monorail. The hotel has been listed on UNESCO's World Heritage List since 2009.
Guests can choose from one of three categories of room: sea view, ocean view, or balcony. All rooms have 24-hour room service, minibars, and ceiling fans. Some rooms have views of the Persian Gulf while others look out onto the Indian Ocean.
The hotel's construction is made up of concrete walls, a steel "exoskeleton," and a concrete core. The aluminum skin was originally painted white.
The Burj al Arab was designed by Zaha Hadid and built by Carillion. It is located in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. The main building is a luxury hotel with 730 rooms, a casino, a shopping mall, a spa, a cinema, a restaurant, and several bars. It opened in 2009.
The hotel's shape is that of an eight-sided polyhedron with some parts in glass. This allows for more light to enter the atrium lobby than a conventional cube-shaped building. The exterior is made of aluminum sheets framed by thin columns of stainless steel. The interior includes two large atria connected by an underground corridor. There are no staircases inside the hotel because all floors are equal height. There are elevators, though, which makes going up or down easy.
The name "Burj" means "tower" in Arabic. The word "Arab" in this context refers to the Gulf Arabs who lived in the area now known as Dubai. They were usually wealthy merchants from Kuwait, Oman, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates.
The structure is made up of roughly 70,000 m3 (92,000 cu yd) of concrete and 9,000 tons of steel. The atrium inside the structure is 180 meters (590 feet) tall. The north-facing facade of the 18-story atrium is surrounded by 12 independently tensioned two-layer membrane panels. These are the only exterior walls that do not contain windows.
When it was built, this was the world's tallest free-standing structure without any internal support. It still holds this title today. The previous record holder, the Eiffel Tower, is now only the second-tallest free-standing structure in the world after the Chrysler Building. The Burj Al Arab has become a symbol of Dubai and the tallest man-made structure in the world.
The building took 10 years to complete. It was opened in 1990 by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, then Prime Minister of Dubai. The cost was $140 million at the time it was built. In 2009, The Economist estimated the cost of the hotel at $500 million.

You can visit the building but you need a reservation more than three months in advance. It is very expensive too ($15 per person).
The structural structure is referred to as a "buttressed core," and it is made up of high-performance concrete wall construction. Each wing buttresses the others by a six-sided central core, often known as a hexagonal hub. The wings themselves are based on the same principle as an airplane wing: They provide support while allowing freedom of movement.
The core is surrounded by an elliptical ring of steel girders, which in turn is enclosed by an outer shell of reinforced concrete. This exterior skeleton forms the floor and roof of the hotel's main atrium.
The designer also incorporated aspects of traditional Arabian architecture into the design of the building. The pointed arch is used extensively in its construction and also provides natural light into the atrium lobby from the surrounding skyscape.
The Burj Dubai is considered to be the world's first true skyscraper because it uses a structural system that allows each floor to stand on its own without any internal supports.
It is also one of only a few buildings with five 21-story towers (the others being the World Trade Center in New York City, the Petronas Twin Towers in Kuala Lumpur, and the CN Tower in Toronto).
The Burj Dubai opened for business in 2009 after being delayed due to financial problems at the developer who was originally going to build it.
