The Twin Towers each featured 110 storeys. The footprint and floors of each skyscraper were nearly an acre in size. On windy days, each tower may swing up to 12 inches from side to side. The Twin Towers had 43,600 windows, totaling more than 600,000 square feet of glass. Each floor had about 100 such windows.
When completed in 1973, the World Trade Center was the highest building in New York City. Its height was 1,453 feet (442 m), with 110 stories plus an additional 7 floors for parking. The base of the building was 300 feet wide by 140 feet long (91 x 46 m).
The Twin Towers were designed by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill LLP and developed by Silverstein Properties. Construction on the first Tower began in January 1972 and it was opened for business on February 4th, 1973 at 10:30 am. The second Tower was completed one year later on February 4th, 1974. They were the tallest buildings in the world for three years until the Sears Tower in Chicago was completed in 1975. The World Trade Center Complex included 1,271 apartments, two 15-story office towers, a six-level garage, a four-level service center, a two-level food court, a 6,300-seat auditorium, a 2,200-space parking lot, and several other structures. There were also plans to build a third Tower, but they never came to fruition.
1 WTC (North Tower) and 2 WTC (South Tower) both had 110 floors and supplied almost 10 million square feet of office space for about 35,000 workers and 430 businesses. They were the highest buildings in New York City, and for a short time after they were finished, they were the tallest structures in the world.
When they were built in 1973 and 1974, the World Trade Center towers were the first major skyscrapers to be constructed in Manhattan since the 1960s. Their height was intended to make them visible from far away, so that business travelers would know where to go when arriving in New York City.
1 World Trade Center was 1,362 feet tall with the South Tower being 1,453 feet tall. The Office of the Mayor of New York City has said that neither tower was ever considered for landmark status.
In September 2001 after the terrorist attacks, both towers were completely destroyed during separate incidents less than three months apart. It was later discovered that explosives had been placed inside both towers, leading some researchers to believe that they may have been targeted.
The trade centers were built by the same company, Silverstein Properties, and used many of the same construction techniques as the original World Trade Center. The new buildings were twice as tall, had more than double the floor space, and contained nearly twice as much living space as the old ones.

The World Trade Center was a pair of skyscrapers in New York City, United States. Constructed from 1973 to 2002, they were the tallest buildings in the world for three years each. The North Tower was 410 feet (125 m) tall, with the South Tower being an additional 40 feet (12 m) tall. A total of 1,362 people died in the attacks at the World Trade Center.
The first World Trade Center building opened in 1972, but it wasn't until nearly 10 years later that the twin towers were completed. The original trade center was an expensive failure, costing $175 million instead of its expected $100 million. It was also under-occupied during its first few years, which caused its owner to default on several loans.
In 1993, after more than 60 years as a publicly traded company, Westinghouse Electric Company decided to go private. Two companies purchased most of Westinghouse's shares: Cerberus Capital Management and Irving Trust Company. These two investors hired a consultant to help them decide how to run Westinghouse.
The original 1 World Trade Center (the North Tower), at 1,368 feet (417 m), and 2 World Trade Center (the South Tower), at 1,362 feet (415.1 m), were the highest structures in the world at the time of their construction. They have since been surpassed by the Burj Khalifa in Dubai and the Shanghai Tower, both of which are also 1,722 feet (541.4 m) tall.
1 World Trade Center was completed in 1973 and originally held the title of "world's tallest building" until 1987 when it was beaten out by the Doha International Financial Centre in Qatar. 2 World Trade Center was built from 2001 to 2003 and took over as the world's tallest building upon its completion. It has since been surpassed by another tower owned by Donald J. Trump: The Trump Tower in Chicago, which is currently ranked number three.
Of the 11 total World Trade Centers that existed on September 11, 2001, only two remain today: One World Trade Center in New York City and one in Birmingham, Alabama. The other nine buildings were completely destroyed.
On November 4, 2002, a fire started in the lobby of Building #2 and spread rapidly due to limited fire protection facilities. The top four floors of the building were completely destroyed while the rest of the building was evacuated with no major injuries reported.
"Though the WTC towers were over 1,360 feet above street level, the structures' bases were really set 70 feet into the earth, and one had a 100-foot-tall antenna atop it," the engineer explained. "That meant their width at their foundations was about 4700 feet."
The total area of both buildings was about 2 million square feet, so they contained nearly 50 acres of space. That's more than three football fields.
One thing that's important to note is that this was before 9/11 when building safety was not as big of an issue as it is now. The architects who designed these buildings didn't worry about air pressure changes or seismic activity; they just wanted to create some amazing architecture that would be admired by people all over the world.
These buildings were indeed beautiful, but they were also deadly. And now they serve as monuments to tragedy.
430 businesses The World Trade Center complex was centered on the Twin Towers.
The complex also included 4 smaller buildings: 3 World Trade Center, which had 46 floors; the 11th floor of 1 World Trade Center; and 7 WTC, which had 4 floors that housed trade centers for people with disabilities. 1 World Trade Center was completed in 1973 and 2 World Trade Center in 1974. The North Tower was destroyed on September 11, 2001 when al-Qaeda terrorists hijacked several commercial airplanes and used them as weapons to destroy parts of New York City and Washington, D.C. The South Tower collapsed approximately 9 minutes after a plane hit it near the top of its height. The collapse of the towers killed nearly 3,000 people.
After the attacks, there were calls from some members of Congress to revoke federal funding from any agency that works on the World Trade Center site. However, after discussions with representatives from New York State and New Jersey, where most of the victims were from, no such action was taken.
