The Empire State Structure relinquished its status as the world's highest building in 1972 to New York's World Trade Center, which had previously been the tallest skyscraper for barely a year. The $58 million trade center was destroyed on September 11, 2001 when two airplanes were hijacked and used as weapons against the United States.
The building was renamed in 1974 after it became apparent that it would be impossible to restore it to its former glory. It was again named the tallest building in the world by some publications, including The Guardian and The BBC. However, this title soon went to another tower in New York, the Chrysler Building, which is now regarded as the first true skyscraper.
The Empire State Building has been called the "Eighth Wonder of the World" and it's easy to see why. Standing at 1,454 feet (442 m), it is taller than any other building in New York City. And with 50 years of history behind it, there's no doubt that it will continue to be one of the city's most popular attractions for years to come.

The Empire State Building is a New York City landmark and an Art Deco masterpiece. The Empire State Structure is a 102-story steel-framed skyscraper in New York City that was built in 1931 and held the Guinness record for tallest building until 1971. Its height is 1,454 feet (442 m) including antennae.
Its shape resembles an inverted "U" with each side consisting of 22 floors. The building's exterior is clad in limestone, granite, and aluminum and features more than 730,000 square feet (70,000 m²) of window area, making it the largest interior space between two ground levels in the world at the time of construction. There are 1,576 windows on the upper floors.
The Empire State Building is known for its art deco design and has been called the world's greatest office building and the highest cathedral. In 2011, it was voted the most iconic building in New York City by readers of the magazine Time Out New York.
It also holds the record for longest running advertising campaign. From 1931 to 1972, Kellogg's used the Empire State Building as their headquarters. When they moved out, they gave up their record.
In addition to being a major tourist attraction, the Empire State Building has been used as a setting for several films, such as 1933's King Kong, 1992's Batman Forever, and 2012's Skyfall.
The state of New York is located in the United States. It was designed by Shreve, Lamb & Harmon and constructed between 1930 and 1931. Its name is taken from the moniker given to the state of New York, "Empire State."

The Chrysler Building was the first structure in the world to surpass the 300 m (984 ft) mark, while the Empire State Building was the first structure to reach more than 100 stories. It has 102 storeys and a height of 381 meters (1,250 feet). The World Trade Center, which was completed in 1971, was the second highest building. It had 998 feet until the Twin Towers were completed in 1973, which became the highest building in New York City until the Empire State Building was built in 1931.
Other tall buildings that have been proposed for construction in New York include One World Trade Center, which is planned for completion in 2014, at the same time as the Empire State Building will be celebrating its 80th anniversary. The skyscraper would be the new home of the International Chamber of Commerce, but it may never be built due to concerns about stability of the site. Another suggestion is the Freedom Tower, which is intended to replace the World Trade Center as a symbol of American freedom and democracy, but this plan has also been criticized because it would be too expensive and might not be safe enough.

In addition to being one of America's most recognizable buildings, the Empire State Building is also one of the most expensive homes on Earth. The price of a standard apartment on the 86th floor is $14 million. The tower has 575 apartments, which makes the average price per unit $272,500.
Construction on the Empire State Building began on January 15, 1931 and was completed on May 1, 1933. At the time it was built, it was the world's tallest building. Today, it is ranked second behind Burj Khalifa in Dubai. The Empire State Building has been called "the perfect work of art" and "a jewel box".
It's no wonder so many people are in love with the Empire State Building. In addition to its beautiful architecture, the building provides an excellent view of the city. Visitors can see for miles in every direction, including across the Hudson River to New Jersey.
