To the south, the early 1990s building of the Maremagnum resulted in the extension of La Rambla on a wooden boardwalk into the Rambla de Mar port. Around 1700, a view of Barcelona's La Rambla, which runs through the city center and is flanked on the right by the old city wall. On the left is the waterfront area known as Port Vell, with its many shops and restaurants.
The first Rambla de Mar was built between 1770 and 1790 to replace an earlier rambleway that had been constructed a few years before. An excavation site in front of the Hotel Arts shows what is believed to be the foundation of the original Rambla de Mar. Experts say the site is similar to other Ramblas in Europe that have been excavated and provide evidence of medieval streets and buildings.
But the original Rambla de Mar was not just streets and buildings.
The stream was rerouted to run outside the new fortifications in 1440, and La Rambla eventually transformed into a roadway. La Rambla, a long, broad boulevard utilized for festivals, marketplaces, and sports, became entrenched as the center of Barcelona's city life during the following few centuries. It is estimated that by the beginning of the 16th century, more than half of Barcelonians were living in wooden houses. When the city walls were built in 1450, La Rambla was one of the main roads leading to the new forts.
After the creation of the New City Hall District in 1994, La Rambla has become yet again a street. But this time it is a pedestrian-only avenue bedecked with trees and flowerpots. The change was made to make room for future developments. No new buildings have been allowed to be constructed on La Rambla since 1938, when Franco put an end to large-scale redevelopment projects in the city.
La Rambla is now used as a venue for various festivals and events throughout the year. In addition to being a popular shopping street, it is also known as a place where people can dance, listen to music, or simply take in the atmosphere after hours at night.
La Rambla has been called "the most beautiful street in the world". The fact that it is only about 100 meters long makes it seem even shorter.
