740 Park Avenue, One Beacon Court, 834 Fifth Avenue, and 432 Park Avenue are four of the most prestigious buildings. Andrew Lamberson for The Wall Street Journal photo Residents speak up about the drawbacks of living in New York's 432 Park, the world's most costly luxury high-rise.
In Manhattan, the most expensive building is 834 Fifth Avenue, which comprises five separate towers with a total price tag of $1 billion. 740 Park, currently under construction at 20th Street and Park Avenue, will be another skyscraper worth tens of millions. In Brooklyn, there's also one $1-billion project: the 21st Century Tower, which is being built across from the United Nations Security Council Chamber.
These are not small sums of money. They're enough to put many people out of work for years while they wait for sales to go through or investors to drop out. And they help drive up housing prices, which can be very hard to come by in other parts of the city.
The most expensive building isn't actually in New York City. It's located in London, where it'll cost you £250 million ($375 million). That makes it the most expensive building in the world. It's called the Pinnacle Building, and it's designed by British architect Richard Rogers.
The building is so expensive because of its size.

You might as well get the most out of your money by finding a nice place in a good neighborhood. These are the best properties in New York.
New York has a highly competitive real estate market that forces prices up. However, this doesn't mean that you should rush into buying a property without looking at what other people are paying.

The city's largest apartment complex is currently under development. The rather ridiculously titled but undoubtedly massive Sky, located on 42nd Street between Eleventh Avenue and the West Side Highway, will eventually hold 1,175 rentals, more than any other in the five boroughs. It will be topped by a 1,576-foot-tall skyscraper that will be the tallest residential building in New York.
The current record holder is One57, which has 622 apartments and stands 57 stories high. It was built by the Durst Organization and designed by Robert A. M. Stern. It won't top out for another year but it already looks like it will be one of the most prestigious buildings in Manhattan. The smallest apartment is about 1,000 square feet (93 sq m) while the largest are about 4,500 square feet (420 sq m).
Existing structures in New York City that are over 40 stories tall include the Bank of America Tower at 55 Water Street, the Citigroup Center at 1 Wall Street, the JPMorgan Chase Building at 200 Park Avenue, and Two Hudson Square. There are also two large mixed-use buildings under construction with a planned height of 700 feet (213 m), which if completed would make them the second highest in the city after One57: the Spiegel Building on East 14th Street and Third Avenue and Tishman Speyer's 520 Madison Avenue. Neither of these buildings have set a completion date yet though.
Even in the 1950s, New York City was pricey in comparison to other places. In 1978, I paid $450 a month for a one-bedroom apartment in a nice doorman building in Chelsea. When the building turned co-op in 1986, I paid $72,950 for the flat. It is currently worth far more than a million dollars.
