It is situated on First Street in DeKalb, Illinois, in DeKalb County. George O. Garnsey designed the Victorian-style residence, which was remodeled in 1898-1899 and 1911. The mansion was once part of a 1,000-acre (4-kilometer-square) estate that featured a massive stable complex known as "Ellwood Green." The property was sold to Chicago lumberman John A. Logan in 1892 for $150,000 ($1.5 million in today's dollars). After moving into the Ellwood House, Logan had it decorated by Charles F. Plummer, who also designed the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C.
The mansion has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since March 5, 1979.

The DeKalb Park District has been granted a $413,000 grant from the 2020 Illinois Public Museum Capital Grants program to assist the maintenance of the Ellwood House Museum, according to the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR).
