Despite the fact that the Sears Structures are taller without antennas than the Petronas Towers without poles, experts include the poles in the measurement rather than the antennas since the poles are a significant architectural design feature for the towers. As a result, the Petronas Towers are the world's tallest structures.
The Sears Tower is currently the second-tallest building in the world after the Shanghai Tower and was the highest building in the world until 1998 when the Petronas Towers were completed. The Sears Tower is also the first steel-framed skyscraper over 400 m (1300 ft) to be built on record; all previous buildings were either concrete or brick. It remains one of only two steel-framed buildings over 400 m to be approved by the Chicago Department of Building Standards (the other being the CN Tower in Toronto).
The Petronas Towers are both telecommunications towers and office buildings and measure 491 m (1650 ft) each with an antenna 392 m (1270 ft) high. They are located in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Construction on both towers began in 1994 and they were completed in 1999. The Petronas Towers are part of a larger complex called the Tun Razak Exchange which includes a mall and several other buildings. The complex is named after Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad's son who later became prime minister himself.
The Petronas Buildings are twin 1,483-foot-tall towers in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. They were the highest buildings in the world until 2004, when they were overtaken by Taipei 101, although they are still the world's tallest twin towers. The buildings contain nearly 5 million square feet of office space and are connected by an underground shopping mall.
The World Trade Center complex in New York City consists of two 110-story skyscrapers (the North Tower was originally intended to be only one tower) that were destroyed on September 11, 2001. The South Tower was converted into a hotel called World Trade Center South Tower. In 2014, a new version of the South Tower was completed that is not as tall but has more floors than the original building. This means that it is now the second-highest trading point in New York after the Empire State Building.
Also in New York City is the John F. Kennedy International Airport terminal where most flights from Kuala Lumpur land. The two airports are less than 20 miles apart. It is a popular flight route because it is short and easy to navigate.
Malaysia is a country in Southeast Asia with a population of 28 million people. Kuala Lumpur is the capital city and also the largest city in terms of population. It is located on the banks of the River Klang about 50 miles south of the Thai border.
This has led in the building of a dome with an integrated pinnacle atop each of the towers, allowing them to exceed 1483 feet (452m) in height, surpassing the Sears Tower in the United States. 451.8m Kuala Lumpur's Petronas Twin Towers are the tallest buildings in Malaysia and among the highest in Southeast Asia.
Construction on the Petronas Towers began in 1993 and was completed in 1998. The two towers are also the world's fastest elevators, capable of reaching speeds of up to 36 meters per second (118 miles per hour). There are only 7 such elevators in the world and they can carry up to 100 people at a time. The elevator cabs are actually inside the tower structure rather than outside as is conventional for this type of lift, reducing noise pollution and adding safety because there are no cables running across city streets.
The total cost of the project was $1.5 billion at the time it was built. However, due to high maintenance costs, the price of using these elevators daily is about $10,000 US dollars.
In addition to being efficient, the twin towers have another unique feature: they are designed to withstand a nuclear attack. If nuclear weapons were used against the structures they would be completely destroyed but the surrounding area would be severely damaged by the resulting fallout. The location of the towers means that any nuclear attack would cause little impact on local population centers.
The Burj Khalifa At 829.8 meters, the Burj Khalifa skyscraper is the world's tallest building (2,722 ft). Guyed masts (such as telecommunication masts), self-supporting towers (such as the CN Tower), skyscrapers (such as the Willis Tower), oil platforms, electrical transmission towers, and bridge support towers are among the structures included. The list below includes only those that are actually used for telecommunications purposes.
The dominance of this one country has led to the question: what's the highest occupied building in the world? The answer depends on how you define "highest". If we look at the tallest building in each country, then there are two clear winners: China with seven such buildings and America with four. But if we include multi-story buildings then the list gets much longer. There are more than 600 buildings over 50 meters (164 feet) in Japan alone!
And now for something different: what's the lowest occupied building in the world? The term "lowest" here does not mean physical height but financial value. The Pudong Airport Expressway in Shanghai is the lowest elevated road in the world at just under 20 meters (66 feet) above ground level. It connects the Pudong International Airport to the city center by way of a new urban expressway link.
Also worth mentioning is the Leaning Tower of Pisa, which is the highest occupied building in Europe.
The Petronas Twin Towers were formerly the world's highest structures. Cesar Pelli & Associates designed the 88-story twin constructions, which are connected at the 41st and 42nd floors (175m above street level) by a 58-metre-long, double-decker Sky Bridge. The towers were completed in 1998 and 1999, respectively. They stand for the state oil company of Malaysia, Petronas.
The Petronas Twin Towers were built as a symbol of Malaysia's progress and prosperity. The towers were meant to be the centerpiece of a new city called Kuala Lumpur, but they were never officially opened. Instead, they were left unoccupied for several years while plans were made to build a new entrance at the base of each tower and add more floors above the existing structure. The Petronas Skyscrapers are still the world's highest twin towers. The towers will remain the highest in Malaysia until the Merdeka PNB 118 is completed (expected in 2021)....
