The Empire State Building may have lost its status as the tallest building in America a long time ago, but it remains the nation's favorite. The ruling raises the building's official height to 1,776 feet, making it taller than Chicago's 1,451-foot Willis (previously Sears) Tower. The difference in height comes from how they are built: the Empire State Building is made of concrete and steel, while the Willis Tower is mostly glass and steel.
In addition to being the tallest building in America, the Empire State Building is also the most expensive skyscraper in history. Construction on the $200 million project began in 1931 and was not completed until months after the Great Depression ended. The 86th floor is said to be where you can see five states-New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, and Massachusetts-from one location.

New York City's Empire State Building The Empire State Building's top level is 1,250 feet (380 meters) tall. The total height of the structure, including the spire and antenna, is 1,454 feet (443 meters). It is now the fourth highest structure in New York City, the sixth tallest structure in the United States, and the 43rd tallest structure in the world. The building was designed by Shubrick and Stewart and built by a team led by John J. McShane. It took more than five years to complete the project at a cost of $40 million ($150 million in 2005 dollars). The building is made of reinforced concrete with decorative panels of glass, metal, and stone. Its shape is based on that of a state tree native to New York: the American elm.
In addition to its use as a radio tower, the Empire State Building has been known for many things over the years, including being the setting for a famous kiss, a murder scene, and the location of which hotel room guests go when they leave town. The building has been called many things over the years, but "tower" is probably as close to an official name as it gets. In fact, the building itself doesn't even use that word to describe itself. The Chrysler Skyscraper, which was built between 1928 and 1930, was temporarily the highest building in the world, standing at 1,046 feet (318.8 metres). It was awarded this honor in November 1929, when the skyscraper was completed with a 180-foot (55-metre) spire, and held the record until the Empire State Building opened in 1931. However, due to an error by its architects, the Chrysler Building was not designed to be structurally sound above the 88th floor (or any other height), so it must be viewed as a display piece rather than a functional skyscraper.
