The Willis Tower is the world's 13th highest structure and the second tallest structure in the United States. The structure, which is located in Chicago, Illinois, is also a major tourist site, with over one million people each year to its observation deck. Roebuck and Company designed the Willis Tower. It was built by the Chicago Bridge & Iron Company from 1973 to 1989 and opened on August 25, 1990. The tower has 88 floors above ground and is high.
The World Trade Center in New York City was originally planned to be only three stories tall, but after the Great Depression, more space was needed to make up for expected losses on sales. The original design called for the trade center to be just under 40 feet tall, but it was increased to 481/2 feet in 1934 when it was realized that this would be a rank among buildings in the world at that time. In 2001, following the destruction of the previous version by terrorists, they were granted a permit to build again. This time, they decided to go for maximum height of 1,776 feet, making the World Trade Center the tallest building in New York.
When the Willis Tower was completed, it was the tallest building in America. But now that title belongs to One World Trade Center, which was built after 9/11. One World Trade Center stands at 471 feet, making it 14 inches shorter than its competitor.
Willis Tower, at 1,450 feet and 110 storeys, is the world's twelfth tallest structure and the second highest building in North America and the Western Hemisphere. Willis Tower has the tallest public observation platform in the United States. The tower also features the first international indoor/outdoor high-speed elevator network.
Willis Tower was designed by the Chicago architectural firm of Graham, Anderson, Probst & White and built by the Chicago Bridge & Iron Company. It opened for business on February 26, 2018. The building stands on a podium about 35 feet high with its main entrance near the top; this allows people using elevators to exit out of floor windows if there is no door on that floor. The tower weighs 930,000 pounds and takes forty-five hours to rigify with epoxy.
The Willis Tower is the home of the National Radio Hall of Fame and contains several other museums. Its restaurant, Skydeck, offers views of downtown Chicago, Lake Michigan, and beyond.
It is named after Dr. Harvey Willis, an American physician who developed the first successful blood transfusion treatment for someone suffering from acute blood loss. Before this treatment was developed, many people died from blood loss due to injury or illness. Today, physicians can use donated blood products to save many lives every day.
Willis Tower has been removed off the list of the top ten tallest buildings in the world. With a height of 2,073 feet, China's Shanghai Tower has surpassed Dubai's 2,722-foot-tall Burj Khalifa to become the world's second highest structure. The news was announced by its developers on Thursday. The building will be 828 feet high with 72 floors.
The Sears Tower is currently the third tallest building in the United States and also the second largest after the Chrysler Building. It was built from 1989 to 1994 and stands 1,453 feet tall with 110 stories. The name "Sears" comes from the Chicago-based retailer that owned part of the building before it was sold to a real estate investment trust in 2008. After the sale, Sears Holdings Corporation no longer had any involvement in the building. However, the company did retain the rights to use its logo throughout the building until 2014 when this contract expired. Since then, no further agreements have been made regarding usage of the logo or appearance of the building.
When it was first built, many people doubted that the tower would ever be able to meet its cost of $150 million. At the time, it was considered to be one of the most expensive things ever built before it opened to great fanfare in 1994.
