The Prudential Tower in Boston, built in 1964, was the highest skyscraper in North America outside of New York City. When it was officially dedicated on June 28, 1930, it was the fourth-tallest skyscraper in the world. It has been surpassed by several other buildings since then.
The Petronas Towers in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, are the current record holders with a height of 535 meters (1,716 feet). They were completed in 1998 and rank as the second-highest free-standing structure in the world after the Sears Tower in Chicago. The first phase of the project was completed in 1994, while the second phase was finished nearly a year later. The towers have 32 floors above ground level and are connected by an underground pedestrian bridge.
The Burj Khalifa in Dubai is the tallest building in the world. It is also the tallest man-made structure in the world. Its height makes it just under 20 stories higher than New York's previous record holder, the Chrysler Building. The Burj Khalifa was opened in 2009 by King Abdullah of Jordan who called it "a monument to human ingenuity". It contains 837 rooms and offers a view of Downtown Dubai, the Gulf, and the Arabian Desert.
One World Trade Center, which stands 1,776 feet tall, is New York's tallest structure (541 m). The 104-story skyscraper is also the highest structure in the United States, the tallest structure in the Western Hemisphere, and the sixth tallest structure in the world. It was completed in January 2014 after 12 years of construction.
The Freedom Tower will be the new name of the building when it is completed in 2016. The original plan was to call the building One World Trade Center, but this was changed before construction began so that it would not be confused with the existing tower.
Another famous building is the Petronas Twin Towers. These are two identical skyscrapers located in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. They were the first skyscrapers to exceed 400 m when they were completed in 1998. The 491 m high towers are the third tallest structures in Malaysia and the 17th tallest in the world.
The World Trade Center complex in New York includes two 110-story office towers that were built at opposite ends of an underground mall. The Shanghai World Financial Center, also known as the Shanghai Tower, is a supertall skyscraper being constructed in Shanghai, China.
When it was finished in 1972, 1 World Trade Center was the tallest skyscraper in the world for two years, eclipsing the Empire State Building after a 40-year reign. The North Tower was 1,368 feet (417 meters) tall and contained a 362 foot (110 meter) telecommunications antenna or mast constructed on the roof in 1978. The South Tower was 1,344 feet (411 meters) tall.
In addition to being the tallest building in New York, 1 World Trade Center was also the second largest building in the world when it was completed (after the Sears Tower). With a total height of 1,763 feet (541 meters), it was surpassed by the Burj Khalifa in 2010 but still holds the record for the fourth tallest building in New York.
World Trade Center was designed by Peter Benjamin Paul and Michael Graves with Edward Durell Stone producing the architectural drawings. The buildings were built by Silverstein Properties and developed by Westway Associates. When they opened in 1973 and 1974, respectively, they were the first true international style skyscrapers to be built in America since the 1930s. They were also the first commercial buildings in New York to be built above 47th Street, which at that time was the edge of the Financial District.
1 World Trade Center was destroyed on September 11, 2001 when al-Qaeda terrorists hijacked several commercial airplanes and used them as weapons to destroy parts of Manhattan.
The city of New York One World Trade Center in New York City has been the tallest building in the United States since it was completed in 2013. The previous record holder, the Willis Tower (formerly known as Sears Tower) in Chicago, was demolished in 2018 to make way for a new skyscraper called The Vantage.
When it is complete in early 2019, The Vantage will be the second-tallest building in the world after Dubai's Burj Khalifa. It will be over 900 feet tall, making it nearly 100 feet taller than its nearest competitor. The Vantage will also have more floors than any other building in America (93).
World Trade Center was conceived by David Childs and Michael Graves with assistance from Peter Eisenman. It was built by Silverstein Properties along with the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. The Vantage will be managed by Oxford Management Company.
Childs and Graves intended for World Trade Center to be a memorial to the 11th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. They planned to incorporate large plates of glass into the building's structure to provide views of the city from all floors. Unfortunately, construction delays forced them to move up the opening date several times, and the building was not finished in time for its original completion date of 2004.
Outside of Chicago and New York, it is also the highest structure. The top five tallest buildings by state are completed by Bank of America Plaza in Atlanta, Georgia, and JPMorgan Chase Tower in Huston, Texas, which stand at 1,023 and 1,002 feet, respectively. The next three are One Wall Street in New York City, 910 feet; Citigroup Center in Los Angeles, 888 feet; and JP Morgan Chase Tower in Houston, 880 feet.
