This method originated in Europe during the Middle Ages, but it was not copied by Americans when they began building towns. The ground level was referred to as the first floor in the United States, while the following level became the second floor. This terminology is still used today for buildings that were built before 1914.
The word "floor" has been used in reference to the upper surface of a room since at least 1325. The term "first floor" appeared in print for the first time in 1770. At that time, new buildings were being constructed with open floors or spaces above the main level for storage or use as apartments. These floors were called "openings," and those who lived on them were called "apartmenters." In 1835, the words "first floor apartment" were used together for the first time in print. By this time, more houses were being built with rooms below and above the main level - sometimes even on several levels - so the word "floors" was replaced with "stories" or "levels".
Americans often ask each other why things are done one way instead of another. This question can be applied to this example as well. One reason may be that having multiple floors makes housing more affordable which helps people start their own businesses or add onto their homes so they can earn more money. Also, a building with many floors is easier to keep clean.
The ground floor is the floor of a building that is level with the ground in British English. The floor that is level with the ground is referred to as the first floor in American English, the floor above it as the second floor, and so on. The term ground floor is used only for buildings that have no elevators; if elevators are available, then the terms first floor, second floor, and so on are used instead.
In French, the ground floor is la première marche or simply le premier. In German, it is der erste Stock or die eine Fläche. The Italian word is il primo piano. The Spanish equivalent is el piso de abajo.
The ground floor is also called the base floor or the basement floor.
A house with more than one floor will have floors numbered from 1-n where n is the number of floors. If a house has four floors but is set back from the street a little, then the third floor would be the ground floor.
If a floor does not have any windows or other openings, then it is completely enclosed, which makes it a room. The people living on this floor cannot see the people on the other floors, nor can they hear them. This is not unusual: many houses have at least one floor that is completely closed off from the others.

Carpets are frequently placed on flooring. The term "floor" can also refer to a building's level. This is also known as a "story." The ground floor is referred to as the "first floor" in the majority of the United States, Russia, and China. The following level is referred to as the "second floor." And so forth.

In buildings that have more than one floor, such as apartments, offices, etc., people have different rooms they can go to. Each room has a door which leads out to a hallway. The hallways are where you will find all of the doors to other rooms. They are always labeled with numbers or letters to indicate which room they lead to. At the end of each hallway is another door which leads out to another part of the building or back to an outside area.
People usually walk on the floor directly below. That is why floors tend to be made of wood, carpet, or tile. If there were any obstacles on the floor, then someone might have to climb over them. These could be furniture or items kept in the room. As well, if there was anything harmful like chemicals that would damage your feet if you walked on them, then they would need to be removed.
