The iron tower for the Exposition Universelle, or World's Fair, was conceived and built by the Eiffel et Compagnie, a corporation controlled by French architect and engineer Alexandre-Gustave Eiffel. The tower, chosen from over 100 bids, would serve as the event's entrance, with visitors from all around the world expected to attend. It was also hoped that the tower would attract tourists to Paris and help lift its image as a modern city.
How did it work? The Eiffel Tower is an elevator designed to take people up one floor at a time. When you go up in the elevator, you enter into a small cage which hangs beneath the main body of the tower. This cage is called the counterweighted basket carriage system. As you travel upward, you pass through different floors of the building where there are usually rooms where exhibitions can be held. These rooms are small but sufficient to hold some objects of interest from each country that could be presented at the Exposition. On top of the tower is a restaurant with views over Paris.
What problems did it solve? The Eiffel Tower provided a unique vantage point from which to view the exhibition site. Visitors could see for many miles in every direction, providing a panoramic view of the entire fair. In addition, the tower was easily recognizable even from a great distance, so it served as a useful landmark for travelers arriving by ship or road.

The Eiffel Tower was designed to be one of the primary attractions during the 1889 Paris World's Fair. That year, the World's Fair took up the whole Champ de Mars in Paris, with the focus on the massive iron and steel structures that represented the enormous industrial advances of the day. The fair ended on June 30, but the tower remained as an icon of Paris.
In addition to its role at the World's Fair, the Eiffel Tower has become a popular monument with tourists today. In fact, it is one of the most photographed buildings in the world.
The tower is located on the Champ de Mars near the Seine River in Paris. It stands 328 feet (100 m) tall and has a base diameter of 98 feet (30 m). The interior rises another 39 floors or so. There are actually three separate towers joined at the base; the middle one is taller than the others. The entire structure weighs nearly seven million pounds (3.2 million kg).
The tower was designed by Gustave Eiffel and it was his first major project after joining the company that would later become known as Eiffel Technologies. The tower took four years to build and it was opened to the public on July 13, 1889. It was an instant success and continues to attract visitors more than 120 years later. In 2014, over 76 million people visited the Eiffel Tower.
